What is the Hanuman Chalisa

The Hanuman Chalisa is one of the most beloved and widely recited devotional hymns in Hinduism, dedicated to Lord Hanuman — the divine devotee of Lord Rama, celebrated for his immense strength, unwavering loyalty, and boundless devotion. The word Chalisa comes from the Hindi word “chālīs” (चालीस), meaning forty, referring to the forty verses (chaupais) that make up the hymn.

History & Origins of the Hanuman Chalisa

The Hanuman Chalisa was composed by the saint-poet Tulsidas (1532–1623 CE), one of the greatest bhakti movement poets of medieval India. Tulsidas is also celebrated as the author of the Ramcharitmanas, the epic retelling of the Ramayana in Awadhi (a dialect of Hindi).The Chalisa is written in Awadhi, and tradition holds that Tulsidas composed it while he was imprisoned by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (some accounts say Akbar), who wanted him to perform a miracle.

Tulsidas refused to do anything but sing the praises of Lord Hanuman, and legend says that Hanuman himself appeared in the form of an army of monkeys that terrorized the city, leading to Tulsidas’s release.The hymn begins with two dohas (couplets) — one as a salutation to Guru and Goddess Sita, and one as a humble invocation — followed by forty chaupais (quatrains), and closes with another doha.

Each verse praises Hanuman’s virtues: his wisdom, his strength, his role as protector, his devotion to Rama, and his ability to dispel evil and grant blessings.The Chalisa is considered so powerful that reciting it regularly is believed to grant protection from evil, relief from suffering, and spiritual liberation. It is recited daily in millions of Hindu households and temples, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, which are considered Hanuman’s sacred days.

Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge; remove my sorrows and impurities.

 

चालीसा (The Forty Verses)

Glory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue. Glory to the Lord of Monkeys, illuminator of the three worlds.

Messenger of Rama, abode of matchless strength. Son of Anjani, known as the Son of the Wind.

महावीर विक्रम बजरंगी। कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥

Golden in complexion, splendidly adorned. With earrings of gold and curly locks.

Holding a thunderbolt and a flag in his hands. The sacred thread of munja grass adorns his shoulder.

शंकर सुवन केसरी नंदन। तेज प्रताप महा जग वंदन॥

The son of Shiva, the delight of Kesari. His radiance and glory are worshipped throughout the world.

विद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर। राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥

Learned, virtuous, and supremely clever. Always eager to serve the cause of Rama.

प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया। राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥

He delights in hearing the stories of his Lord. Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita dwell in his heart.

सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा। बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥

Taking a tiny form, he appeared before Sita. Taking a fearsome form, he burned Lanka.

भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे। रामचंद्र के काज सँवारे॥

Taking a mighty form, he slew the demons. He accomplished the mission of Lord Ramachandra.

लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये। श्री रघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥

Bringing the Sanjeevani herb, he revived Lakshmana. The great Raghuvir (Rama) joyfully embraced him.

रघुपति कीह्नी बहुत बड़ाई। तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥

Raghupati (Rama) praised him greatly, saying: “You are as dear to me as my brother Bharata.”

सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं। अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावैं॥

“A thousand mouths sing your glory,” saying this, the Lord of Lakshmi (Rama) embraced him.

सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा। नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥

Sages like Sanaka, Brahma, and other great sages. Along with Narada, Saraswati, and Shesha.

जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते। कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहाँ ते॥

Yama, Kubera, and the guardians of directions. Even poets and learned men cannot fully describe his glory.

तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीह्ना। राम मिलाय राज-पद दीह्ना॥

You helped Sugriva greatly. You united him with Rama and restored his kingdom.

तुम्हरो मंत्र विभीषण माना। लंकेश्वर भये सब जग जाना॥

Vibhishana heeded your counsel. He became the lord of Lanka — the whole world knows this.

जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू। लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥

The sun, thousands of yojanas away, you swallowed thinking it a sweet fruit.

प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं। जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥

Placing the Lord’s ring in your mouth, you leapt across the ocean — no wonder!

दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते। सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥

All difficult tasks in this world become easy with your grace.

राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे। होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥

You are the guardian at Rama’s door. Nothing enters without your permission.

सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना। तुम रक्षक काहू को डर ना॥

One who seeks your refuge gains all happiness. With you as protector, there is no fear.

आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै। तीनों लोक हाँक ते काँपै॥

You alone can contain your own might. All three worlds tremble at your roar.

Giver of the eight spiritual powers and nine divine treasures. Such a boon was granted by Mother Janaki (Sita).

You hold the elixir of Ram-devotion. May you always remain the servant of Raghupati (Rama).
